THE MOFFAT ROAD Part 1 Blu-Ray

THE MOFFAT ROAD Part 1 Blu-Ray

In Central Colorado where the Great Plains meet the Rockies, trains battle a short, stiff grade to the Continental Divide. Denver business man David Moffat spent his entire fortune building this engineering marvel. Although he never lived to see its success, this stretch of track was instrumental to the growth of Colorado and remains a busy main line today.

Part of Union Pacific's Denver Area, this former piece of Denver and Rio Grande Western track is known as the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision. In Part 1 of this two-part series, we will cover the east side between Denver and the Moffat Tunnel. Watch trains wrap around Big Ten Curve, climb through the rugged Tunnel District, and disappear under the Continental Divide through the famous 6.2 mile-long Moffat Tunnel. Cresting the Rockies at over 9,000 feet, this is the highest active mainline in North America.

Coal traffic is king on the Moffat Tunnel Sub, with loaded trains heading east to Denver and empties returning west. The steep mountain grades require additional locomotives in the middle and rear of eastbound coal trains, creating a fantastic show of horsepower. Besides coal, mixed manifests from both UP and BNSF plus Amtrak's California Zephyr make a daily appearance. There's nothing like mountain railroading in the Colorado Rockies! This program was shot between August and October, 2012.

Stacks in the High Sierras

For over 140 years the Sierra Nevada Mountains of northern California have reverberated with the sounds of hard-working locos of the Central Pacific, Southern Pacific and now the UP. In November, 2009 double-stack traffic was re-routed off the nearby Feather River Canyon adding to the frequency of trains on this legendary route.

7idea Productions made three trips to Donner Pass between January and September 2010 to capture the many personalities of "The Hill" between Roseville, California and Sparks, Nevada. From late summer sun to blizzard conditions on the mountain, you'll have a front row seat of the action!

Take in the amazing view of mainline action from high atop Red Mountain, the old Central Pacific fire lookout above Cisco. Stand inside the snow sheds of Norden as a heavy stack train blasts through! Snowshoe into Troy and see Jordan Spreaders and flangers hard at work clearing the white stuff off the double-track main! Feel the ground shake as 10,000 foot stack and manifest trains labor up 2% grades in Run 8! Distributed power is everywhere, as Union Pacific utilizes this technology for more efficient train handling. Witness heavy trains running in 4x2, 1x1x1, even 3x3x1 configurations.

Shot in beautiful high-definition in spring, late summer and winter, this is the ultimate look at Donner Pass!

Following in the footsteps of the incredible and highly successful first Santa Fe Odyssey comes volume 2. The first volume was filmed over a 23 year period. Volume 2 takes over where the first volume left off. Filmed in the late 1970s over a 23 day period, Emery Gulash captured the transition of the Santa Fe as it aligned itself for the 1980s and 1990s. Coverage starts in illinois and continues west to include California. Amtrak is now firmly entrenched and so you will see plenty of passenger trains and with its new second generation diesels there are Santa Fe freights galore, including some of the older transitory diesel paint and colour schemes. There is incredible action in the Mid-West and West, all photographed with the benefit of consistently bright crisp and well colour balanced 16mm film. Action at Cajon Pass and Tehachapi are typical Gulash: incredible coverage and photo composition - there is none better! Compelling viewing and an important documentary of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe in the 1970s.

Dolton Junction is located about 23 miles south of Chicago's loop. The joint Union Pacific/CSX line crosses the Indiana Harbor Belt and CSX. To the west is the IHB's Blue Island yard with a bridge carrying the Illinois Central over the Belt. The Pennsy's former 'Panhandle' line is abandoned south of the junction and these days sees little traffic north of the junction, primarily the 'Bottle Train' carrying molten steel. The CSX line to Barr Yard is the former Baltimore & Ohio, Chicago Terminal. The UP and CSX south of the junction was formally the Chicago & Eastern Illinois. Our location is the southeast corner of the diamond.

See two days of trains and get a look inside the tower. There are many paint schemes from the four major railroads, plus Canadian Pacific, SOO and the IHB.
