BNSF Railway's KOOTENAI RIVER SUB Blu-Ray

BNSF Railway's KOOTENAI RIVER SUB Blu-Ray

22.00

Come on an exciting journey through the rugged mountains of northern Idaho and northwestern Montana! BNSF's Kootenai River Subdivision is a busy section of the Northern Transcon running between Sandpoint Junction and Whitefish.

High priority Z trains race between Chicago and the west coast. Stack trains, grain, coal, oil, and mixed merchandise trains run back and forth across the beautiful countryside. This seldom visited line connects two well known railfan hot spots: The Funnel and Marias Pass. It follows the very scenic Kootenai River through the densely forested Cabinet Mountains, allowing trains to sprint along the water level course. Then it's a steady 1% climb through the Salish Range where the thunder of hard-working diesels echoes through the mountains.

The top of the grade is marked by the seven mile long Flathead Tunnel, the second longest in the United States. Modern diesel locomotives are everywhere including GE ES44C4's, GEOVS, Dash 9's, EMD SD70ACe's, SD70MAC's, even SD90/43AC's make an appearance on Union Pacific's nearby Spokane Sub. Great railroading action and fantastic scenery abound in BNSF Railway's Kootenai River Sub!

Shot in stunning hi-definition in the winter, summer and fall of 2013..

HERITAGE SERIES FROM THE CAMERA OF EMERY GULASH

Things were a little different on the Penn Central during every one of the eight years of its brief existence. By mid 1971, nearly all the locomotives of the predecessor Pennsylvania and New York Central railroads had been repainted into sombre dark, dark Brunswick green. The railroad was mired deeper and deeper in bankruptcy, as a new national rail passenger carrier, Amtrak, was starting to emerge from the dark shadows of the PC's paint scheme following its launching on May 1st, 1971.

Emery Gulash had his movie cameras trained on the rail action. He starts with a series of scenes in America's Railroad Capital, Chicago, as Amtrak and Penn Central trains burnish the rails in and out of Union Station. The old Michigan Central depot at Detroit serves as an anchor for Emery, as he returns again and again from his travels to photograph trains at the formidable structure.

Amtrak demonstrates its United Aircraft Turbotrain at Niles and Kalamazoo. Toledo comes in for its share of pulsating train operations, as do Ypsilanti, Dearborn, Jackson, Chelsea, New Buffalo, Ann Arbor, Westland, and Delphi Mills, Michigan. Our very full program winds up with scenes of two special passenger trains operated in November 1972 by the Chessie System for General Motors executives bound for a business conference in West Virginia.
