Toledo to Summit

Deep in the coastal hills of western Oregon lies a backwoods railroad which weaves through America's premiere timber producing lands. Operated by the Portland and Western Railroad, the line services a Georgia Pacific paper mill in the small town of Toledo. Trains make the seventy-five-mile journey over the branch line nearly every day between its namesake town of Toledo and Albany in the lush Willamette Valley.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, we will show you the west end of the line with an insightful combination of historic images and modern-day operations. Visit the former station of Yaquina and see remnants of the old rail line abandoned by the Southern Pacific in 1936. See the GP paper mill and take a tour of the Western Cascade Industries sawmill. Follow the railroad as it charts an inland course along the Yaquina River crossing it fifteen times on rickety wooden trestles.

With the passing of each milepost lie the ghosts of old derailments, stations, mills, and communities long forgotten. The climax of the journey is a stiff 2.58% mountain grade over the summit of the Coast Range. The classic two-stroke EMD's thunder up the west side lugging heavy trains of containerboard. 2 hours 14 minutes* Stereo Sound * Narration on/

Through the Oregon Cascades Part 1: The Long Grade

Through the Oregon Cascades Part 1: The Long Grade

21.00

The Cascade Mountains of western Oregon are thick with tall timber growing along steep slopes broken by waterfalls and streams. This is the setting for a mountain railroad that climbs from deep within the Willamette Valley to nearly 5,000 feet above sea level at Cascade Summit.

Part 1: The Long Grade, begins at Eugene Yard and heads railroad south into the foothills of the Cascades. A forty mile 1.8% grade between Oakridge and Cascade Summit puts UP's newest locomotives to the test and keeps train crews on their toes. The line wraps around horse shoe curves, crosses trestles, and disappears through numerous rock sheds and tunnels before reaching the top of the pass.

In this highly anticipated follow up to "Union Pacific's Cascade Sub," we hike deeper into the most remote parts of the line and visit ground zero of the Frazier Slide which closed the railroad for three months in 2008. This is one of the most rugged portions of the I-5 Corridor which links the Pacific Northwest with California!

Shot in beautiful hi-definition between 2008 and 2015 in all seasons, this is the ultimate journey through the Oregon Cascades!

C. Vision Productions' Minnesota Train Action series is a 50 volume series that covers the wide variety of railroading throughout the state and the metro area of the Twin Cities in all seasons of the year. Our coverage in this series began in 2008 and conclude in late 2019. The main players are BNSF, Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific and Canadian National. Short lines included are Twin Cities and Western, Minnesota Southern, St. Croix Valley, Minnesota Commercial and more! Along with the main line trains, we catch many locals and transfers with older power. In 2014, North Dakota opened the Bakken Oil Fields and the railroads played a major part in moving this commodity. With much of the North Dakota oil going to the U.S. Northeast and Southeast, power from CSX, Norfolk Southern and Kansas City Southern made numerous appearances in Minnesota. Including several of Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific's Heritage units. From Alco RS27's to Tier 4 SD70Ace's and GEVO's, this series shows it all!
