Summit to Albany

Portland and Western's Toledo Branch weaves through America's premier timber producing lands in western Oregon. This backwoods railroad serves a Georgia Pacific paper mill in the small town of Toledo. Five days a week, trains make the seventy-five mile journey over the branch line between its namesake town and Albany in the lush Willamette Valley.

Part 2 of this series will focus on the east end of this former Southern Pacific branch line with an insightful combination of historic images and modern-day operations. We begin at the remote community of Summit and follow the weaving course of the Mary's River down the east side of the heavily forested Coast Range. Aerial photography provides an amazing perspective of the more isolated portions of the branch.

EMD GP39-2's and GP40P slug sets power trains of containerboard, wood chips, and lumber through the rugged coastal mountains. The railroad crosses numerous secluded trestles and passes graveyards of old mills with a history as rich as the beautiful scenery that surrounds it. Leaving the woods, the line traverses busy city streets and races through open farm land before meeting the Willamette River and the Union Pacific main line at Albany.

Experience history with the "Big Boy"! For the first time since 1961, Union Pacific’s Big Boy, number 4014 ran under its own power becoming the largest operational steam locomotive in the world in 2019. Big Boy has been on display in Pomona, California since 1961, but after an extensive rebuild years in the making, the Big Boy took off from Cheyenne, Wyoming in May 2019, to Utah to take part in the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Golden Spike.

As part of this historic event, Union Pacific took the Big Boy on a tour in July and August of 2019 in what was called "The Great Race Across the Midwest." C. Vision Productions covers a part of this tour from Mason City, Iowa, up to the Twin Cities and Twin Ports in Minnesota, then through Wisconsin, down to Chicago and across Illinois into Iowa. 16 videographers were on hand to document this giant locomotive from both the ground and the air!

Toledo to Summit

Deep in the coastal hills of western Oregon lies a backwoods railroad which weaves through America's premiere timber producing lands. Operated by the Portland and Western Railroad, the line services a Georgia Pacific paper mill in the small town of Toledo. Trains make the seventy-five-mile journey over the branch line nearly every day between its namesake town of Toledo and Albany in the lush Willamette Valley.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, we will show you the west end of the line with an insightful combination of historic images and modern-day operations. Visit the former station of Yaquina and see remnants of the old rail line abandoned by the Southern Pacific in 1936. See the GP paper mill and take a tour of the Western Cascade Industries sawmill. Follow the railroad as it charts an inland course along the Yaquina River crossing it fifteen times on rickety wooden trestles.

With the passing of each milepost lie the ghosts of old derailments, stations, mills, and communities long forgotten. The climax of the journey is a stiff 2.58% mountain grade over the summit of the Coast Range. The classic two-stroke EMD's thunder up the west side lugging heavy trains of containerboard. 2 hours 14 minutes* Stereo Sound * Narration on/
