MRL
MONTANA MAINLINE PART 2...Helena
to Sandpoint
by 7idea Productions
In
MRL Montana Mainline Part 2, we return
to Helena in the dead of winter as trains
prepare to do battle with Mullan Pass.
A strong Canadian storm system slammed
into the Rockies sending the mercury below
zero while a quintet of MRL's EMD SD70ACe's
put on a fantastic show shoving heavy
trains to the summit. This is a mountain
railroading at its best with 2.2% grades,
numerous curves and high trestles.
Shot in January and July of 2011, you
will see the MRL taking on Mullan Pass
in all types of weather as it climbs to
the continental divide at Blossburg via
the famous Mullan Tunnel. The action doesn't
stop there, as trains race west along
the 3rd, 4th and 10th subdivisions through
the fantastic scenery that is the hallmark
of Montana. Catch trains as they follow
the course of the Clark Fork River and
scale high above the treetops on Evaro
Hill. Our tour concludes as we head west
through the Bitterroot Mountains along
the banks of the Clark Fork to Sandpoint,
Idaho where MRL joins BNSF's busy "Funnel."
A great variety of trains run over the
line including coal, grain, mixed manifests
and MRL's daily gas train. From perfect
sunny skies, through thunderstorms and
winter's arctic chill, this is a trip
to MRL country you won't soon forget!
Raw horsepower and beautiful scenery combine
again for two great hours of entertainment.

The Modelers Annual
- Winter 2012
Ken
Hamilton builds an almost astounding 1:25 scale A-frame lumber stacker diorama
(truck with tall extension on the back to hoist boards onto tall stacks
of lumber at mills). Ken has authored many articles for Kalmbach's Finescale
Modeler but this thing is a departure from his usual material and one of
his very best.
Bob McManus shows how to create the most realistic granite rocks and mountain
scenery you have ever seen -- REALLY!
Chuck Doan completes a SUPERB 1:24 abandoned garage diorama and describes,
step-by-step, exactly how to recreate most aspects. Close ups are indistinguishable
from 1:1 -- something almost nobody else ever has achieved. It is the cover
article.
Gordon Birrell, in 1:16 scale, and Marty Jones, in 1:48, build Fordson power
shovels (like a steam shovel but powered by a gas powered Fordson tractor).
Gordon describes how to scratchbuild the motor, radiator, cowling, and other
basic subassemblies to use as the basis for four different Fordson vehicles.
Marty tells how he used a few parts from a commercial kit and scratchbuilt
the rest of his shovel.
John McGuyer explains how to fabricate brass details and how to work with
cast resin and styrene parts, in this case for a 1:32 scale SP reefer. It
is a generic primer on how to construct brass parts and tips on wall and
roof assembly, not a reefer construction article.
Nick Ogden describes how he built a 1:35 scale structure ... literally brick
by brick! He also goes into detail on the scenic treatment. And he shows
how to make your own plaster bricks and interlocking brick wall panels.
The man has gone mad but the results are superlative.
Finally, three chapters on building with cardstock (heavy paper): First
the results of our "build a small card structure" contest. Then
Sam Swanson tells how and where he uses cardstock to scratchbuild parts
for all kinds of models -- integrating card, styrene, wood, and metal into
a single model -- using the best material for each part. Finally, I (Russ
Reinberg) reveal my latest discoveries in using inkjet printed cardstock
(and art papers) to create extremely realistic, board-by-board models without
ever touching a bottle of paint: Just print, cut, assemble, then dab a few
spots with pastel chalks and you have a contest quality model.

PILLARS
of SMOKE in the SKY by Herron Rail Video
PILLARS
of SMOKE in the SKY is a unique film about Norfolk and
Western steam operation over the famous Blue Ridge Grade
in 1957. Filmed with the cooperation of N&W management,
producer E. C. Eddy was given full access to the line,
yards and was allowed to ride aboard the Y class helper
and pusher engines as they moved heavy coal trains from
Roanoke to the top of the grade. No other film of N&W
has the on-train perspectives that Mr. Eddy captured
on 16mm film. The DVD has chapters.

RAILS
& THE MOTHER ROAD
- A Route 66 Rail Adventure by Highball Productions
Well,
this one's a bit different. Elrond Lawrence's book "Route
66 Railway" convinced me that I should go take a look
and see what was left of Route 66's artifacts.
Disc 1 takes a look at California, from San Bernardino,
over Cajon, through Victorville to Barstow, and across the
Mojave to Needles and the bridge at Topok.
Disc 2 takes a look at Arizona, from Kingman Canyon to Flagstaff
and on to Canyon Diablo, Winslow, Holbrook and the the NM
border at Lupton. In addition to the trains, you'll see
neon, abandoned gas stations, tourist traps and restored
depots.

Day
of The Spreader by BA Productions
The
U P's Conner Summit line crosses the Sierra Nevada at over
7000 feet. Harsh winters, below freezing temperatures, snow
falls of 48 inches per day and up to 65 feet a year, create
difficulties in keeping this vital pass open. When the snow
gets too high for the Flangers, the spreader is deployed.
Large snow drifts are shoved off banks and bridges clearing
the path for new snow falls. With the nose blade down, the
wings extended and a little speed, the Spreader can move
a mountain of snow.
