Donner Pass...Stacks in the High Sierras
by 7idea Productions

For over 140 years the Sierra Nevada Mountains of northern California have reverberated with the sounds of hard-working locos of the Central Pacific, Southern Pacific and now the UP. In November, 2009 double-stack traffic was re-routed off the nearby Feather River Canyon adding to the frequency of trains on this legendary route.
7idea Productions made three trips to Donner Pass between January and September 2010 to capture the many personalities of "The Hill" between Roseville, California and Sparks, Nevada. From late summer sun to blizzard conditions on the mountain, you'll have a front row seat of the action!
Take in the amazing view of mainline action from high atop Red Mountain, the old Central Pacific fire lookout above Cisco. Stand inside the snow sheds of Norden as a heavy stack train blasts through! Snowshoe into Troy and see Jordan Spreaders and flangers hard at work clearing the white stuff off the double-track main! Feel the ground shake as 10,000 foot stack and manifest trains labor up 2% grades in Run 8! Distributed power is everywhere, as Union Pacific utilizes this technology for more efficient train handling. Witness heavy trains running in 4x2, 1x1x1, even 3x3x1 configurations.
Shot in beautiful high-definition in spring, late summer and winter, this is the ultimate look at Donner Pass!

New From HEIMBURGER

Nevada Central
by Mallory Hope Ferrell

A deluxe volume that traces the amazing story of a three-foot-gauge railroad that ran through the heart of the great American Basin. Built to carry the commerce of rich silver and gold strikes, the Nevada Central struggled against tremendous odds for six decades. Often called “a line in the sand,” the 93-mile-long rail route ran between Battle Mountain, where it connected with the Central Pacific, in a southwesterly direction to Austin, Nevada. Most of the rail was 35# iron; the struggling railroad line crossed 66 timber trestles between its end points. The railroad began construction in 1879 to help open up the vast and virtually unpopulated area of the Silver State. Running through some of the most barren and remote high desert sagebrush and mountain country in the West, the Nevada Central rolled down through the years with much of its original equipment, mainly because it could never afford to purchase anything newer.

Railroads of Arizona, Vol. 6 - Jerome and the Northern Roads
By David F. Myrick

This addition to Myrick's renowned series on Arizona railroads covers the great copper operation at Jerome, and a number of roads in the northern part of the state, including the still-operating Grand Canyon Railway. The Grand Canyon trackage was for many years a Santa Fe branch, and serves a tourist railroad today. Both the construction history, as well as the story of the line's revival in the 1990s, are thoroughly covered here. Jerome was served by four railroads at various times, most notably the Verde Tunnel & Smelter Railroad, a property of United Verde Copper Company, the primary mining producer at Jerome. Also noteworthy was the United Verde & Pacific narrow gauge, which has its own chapter here, as does the United Verde Extension Railroad. Both are part of the complex railroad history of the Jerome area. Another road serving the Jerome area was the Verde Valley Railway, long a Santa Fe branch, and active today as both the Arizona Central (for freight) and Verde Canyon (tourist trips). Thoroughly documented here are several shorter-lived railroads which served mining camps, including the Arizona & Swansea, Arizona & Utah, the Mohave & Milltown, and the narrow gauge line serving Ryan. Notable occurences in the mining camps are described too. Also presented are the modern coal-hauling roads, the Coronado and the Black Mesa & Lake Powell railroads. Even some of the famous unbuilt railroad proposals, like the Arizona Northern and the Intermountain, St. George & Grand Canyon, have their place in the story, and their history is here.
More than 235 photos, most previously unpublished, in addition to 28 of the author's maps. Material from period newspapers and other publications enlivens the text, with much mining as well as railroad history. It is a superb package of Arizona and railroad history. Size: 248 pages, 8.5" x 11", hard covers; 235 photos, 28 maps, bibliography, index

Marias Pass...BNSF Railway’s Hi-Line Subdivision
by 7idea Productions

It’s mid October at Glacier National Park in Montana’s rugged Rocky Mountains. Fall splendor has faded from the quaking aspens. Stands of larch have begun their annual transformation from green to yellow before their needles fall. The wind-swept open country to the east has taken on shades of brown while evidence of recent snows highlights the mountain peaks. Somewhere below all of this the Middle Fork of the Flathead River meanders through this wild and scenic country on its way west. The icy water knows an easy way through this forbidding mountain range and so does a railroad, for this place is Marias Pass. Today’s BNSF Railway continues to use this historic route through the Rockies forged over 100 years ago by the “Empire Builder” James J. Hill. Beginning at Whitefish, BNSF’s Hi Line Sub heads east through tunnels, trestles, wooden snow sheds and over the Continental Divide where mountain forests meet the high plains. Witness heavy trains and big power rolling through Montana’s Big Sky Country. Enjoy bonus scenes of SP Daylight steam locomotive #4449 in Montana and Idaho.
