New Books From Arcadia

NORTH BEACH PENINSULA'S IR&N
by Sydney Stevens, Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum.

For nearly 40 years, the quirky little narrow-gauge railroad, begun in 1889 by the Ilwaco Railway and Navigation Company, ran along the North Beach Peninsula in southwestern Washington. The train provided the primary transportation link from Ilwaco in the south to Nahcotta in the north, making peninsula communities accessible to one another and supplying a reliable route to outside markets for the area’s major industries—oystering, logging, and cranberry farming. A tide table, not a timetable, governed the railroad’s schedule, allowing coordination with the steamers that met the train at either end of its daily journeys. Old-timers of the area still speak affectionately of the train’s unorthodox schedule and its informal and accommodating service. And they remember with fondness that the IR &N was widely known as the “Irregular, Ramblin’ and Never-get-there Railroad.” # of Pages: 128

PLEASANTS COUNTY
by Ellen Dittman Pope, Ruth Ann Dayhoff

Formed from portions of Wood, Tyler, and Ritchie Counties, Pleasants County was founded in 1851 and was named after Gov. James Pleasants Jr. of Virginia. Residents of Pleasants County fondly recall many of the buildings that no longer exist today, such as the button factory, blacksmith shop, marble factory, and the Quaker State Oil Refinery, all of which are preserved in the photographs that are showcased throughout Images of America: Pleasants County. Taking a step back in time, these photographs illustrate how the town and county looked more than 100 years ago, exploring a variety of the county’s activities and historic scenes and offering a colorful insight into the past as well as the present. Durango & Silverton
by Sam Furukawa

- A photographic celebration of America's favorite narrow gauge train ride
FOR ALMOST 130 YEARS the shrill whistles of steam locomotives have echoed off the steep walls of Southwestern Colorado's beautiful Animas River valley.
Railroads first came to this remote region in the decade of the 1880s, in search of gold and silver. Colorado had just achieved statehood, and the rush was on to exploit the new territory to the fullest.
Durango became the center of this booming mining district, and after pausing there briefly, the Denver & Rio Grande pushed its rails 45 miles up the Animas valley to Silverton.
The line, then called the Silverton Branch, was a marvel of 19th-century civil engineering. Today it operates as the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and it is no less a marvel.
The D&SNG is also a priceless and nearly perfectly preserved example of living history. Every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Durango to ride the trains - still powered by superbly maintained steam engines - and to experience the unblemished wilderness of the Animas River gorge.
D&SNG trains and locomotives, the people who run them, and the superb scenery they traverse are the subjects of the photographs in this book. The history of the line has been covered in many other volumes, so the photos here seek to portray this breathtaking railroad as it operates in the 21st Century.
176 pages, hard cover, 8.5" x 11", 250 photos, all color,

Cumbres & Toltec

Hundreds of thousands of visitors have ridden Cumbres & Toltec trains during its 35 years of operation. Shot between 1999 and 2006, the photos in this book are what their experience looked like from trackside. Some of the pictures are from well beyond trackside, including a series of remarkable photos shot from a jet helicopter at the height of the 2006 fall foliage season in the San Juan mountains.

BIG BOYS AND CHALLENGERS
by
Greg Scholl Productions

This video has been years in the making, as we have attempted to accumulate enough footage to justify such a release. We have 8mm footage by Warren Scholl, shot in 1954, but the majority of footage is 16mm color footage, including a good amount by Perry Becker who made more than one trip to the area. Locations shown are North Platte, Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins, and of course action on Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie. You will see interesting things such as a "Big Boy" number 4006 on fire as it exits Hermosa Tunnel, with its stack hood still on as well. Also see a Gas Turbine leading a Big Boy in 3 different scenes. You will see the engine service areas in the locations mentioned above, and see some of the dead engine lines late in the steam era. This footage is all shot silent of course, and we have added music and informative narration. However, we do have another segment with some 16mm sound footage on Sherman Hill which includes several doubleheaders, such as 5500 series 2-10-2's with Challengers and Big Boys. There are also a couple of Big Boy scenes by Everett Rohrer, and some film he shot of the first test run, and first excursions in 1982 when Challenger 3985 first operated. So, for all those lovers of BIG BOYS, and big articulated steam Giants this one is for you.

New Book From Heimburger House

Trains to Victory - America’s Railroads in WWII
by Don Heimburger and John Kelly

Trains to Victory tells the dramatic story of the years 1941-1945 when U.S. railroads, using fewer cars and locomotives than in WWI, moved more tonnage and more passengers than ever before. Divided into 13 chapters, plus a 32-page four-color section, an introduction, bibliography and a complete index, the volume appeals to railfans, historians, military historians, and many others.
The 380-page hardbound book features 542 photographs, an additional 285 illustrations, a four-color laminated dustjacket and a complete listing of U.S. military camps, posts and bases as of August 1, 1941. The book discusses the implications of the war on the railroads, embarkation of troops and materiels, how the Military Railway Service joined the fight and what was happening on U.S railroads during the war. It also addresses new railroad cars and locomotives built for the war, military camp railroads, how Alaska’s railroads played a part in the conflict, how women helped the war effort, and what was happening in foreign theaters. It describes how railroads aided in the return of wounded troops and equipment, and the atmosphere on the railroads immediately after the war. Scale drawings of war-emergency box cars are also included, as are troop train car plans.
Trains to Victory covers such topics as the huge Chicago & NorthWestern Proviso Yards during wartime, personal glimpses of the war from a number of railroaders and intriguing aspects of the war from the Army Engineers, Association of American Railroads and the War Department. Wartime products of locomotive and railroad car manufacturers such as Baldwin, Alco, Davenport, Lima, Whitcomb, Budd, Electro-Motive, H.K. Porter, Pullman, American Car & Foundry and the St. Louis Car Company are documented throughout the volume. Hardbound, 8 ? x11", 380 pages, 825 illustrations, 32-page all-color photo section, 13 chapters, extensive historical military/railroad documentation.
