New Book Series From ARCADIA
Reading Trains and Trolleys by Philip K. Smith
Rail transportation has been part of daily life in Reading since the 1830s. Reading Trains and Trolleys portrays the good old days of the Philadelphia & Reading Railway (reorganized as the Reading Company in 1923), the Schuykill Valley Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Mount Penn Gravity Railroad, the Neversink Mountain Railroad, the Reading City Passenger Railway, and the Reading Traction Company. The Reading Railroad gained widespread recognition as a property for sale on the Monopoly board, but the history of trains and trolleys in Reading goes well beyond that iconography. Reading Trains and Trolleys documents the impact of railroad and trolley networks on Reading and adjoining communities, including photographs of the interior of the locomotive shop and the carbarn at Tenth and Exeter Streets, views of the Walnut Street yard before and after the Outer Station was constructed, and views from the Swinging Bridge, which spanned the yard by the Outer Station. The Historical Society of Berks County's collection of rail photographs includes many never-before-published images of diverse scenes in and around Reading. # of Pages: 128

Hartford Trolleys by Connecticut motor Coach Museum
By 1908 Hartford had an extensive system of streetcar lines radiating from the city in all directions. The Hartford division of the Connecticut Company totaled more than one hundred twenty-five miles of track for streetcars, the dominant mode of public transportation in central Connecticut. One could take a car to New Britain, Stafford Springs, or all the way to Springfield, Massachusetts. By the 1920s, the lighter density streetcar lines were no longer lucrative and the system was converted to a motor coach operation; by the early 1930s, the automobile had replaced the streetcar as the favored mode of transport. The advent of automobile transportation eventually led to the closing of all the Hartford streetcar lines in July 1941. # of Pages: 128
The Long Island Railroad 1925-1975 by David Keller, Steven Lynch
Chartered on April 24, 1834, as a route from Brooklyn to Boston, the Long Island Rail Road commenced in 1836 with service between Brooklyn and Jamaica, New York. The railroad has linked Long Island and New York City through several periods of increasing immigration and population beginning in the 1880s. Farmers and fishermen have depended on the railroad for their livelihood, and every summer thousands of tourists flock to Long Island beaches on the Long Island Rail Road. It is still the nation’s largest commuter railroad, transporting an average of over two hundred fifty thousand commuters daily. The Long Island Rail Road: 1925–1975 offers a behind-the-scenes look at freight and passenger activities and the people who worked on the railroad. These one-of-a-kind photographs depict structures no longer in use, such as towers, water tanks, and crossing shanties, as well as electric motive power and other facets of a working railroad. # of Pages: 128
DVDS
We bring back the Santa Fe with great action in many So.Cal. locations. This parade of power over the decades is a tribute to one of the most popular western railroads of all time. The scenes are taken from old movie film shot by many railfans. The material from the early 90s was shot on video before the end of the Santa Fe as an independent company. The paint schemes shown are all the phases from the early black with white stripes and beautiful passenger F-units with freight bluebonnet power and the later yellow bonnets. 1950s-94 Tehachapi Cajon Pass Needles Sub Stockton Eastbay The video of the 90s shows a revival of the red & silver warbonnet theme that the Santa Fe used to reclaim all the public recognition that their service deserved. Many of the video scenes were selected from our retired videos on Cajon, Tehachapi and the Needles Subdivision. They represent a composite of the very best pre-merger Santa Fe scenes shot with multiple cameras. It's really amazing that the Santa Fe has been gone for over a decade now. We hope this video will renew your interest in her.

Two Fantastic Releases from Greg Scholl
This program was original intended to be on the East Bay Area of Californina, but it has been widened to include other things. We begin in San Jose, California, and work our way up to Oakland. Many commuter trains with Pacific's are seen, as well as war-time black Daylights, Cab Forward's, 4-8-2's, and smaller power on locals. Then we divert to the Altamont Pass line and see several Cab Forward articulateds, and even a 4-10-2 leading one train. Then we continue to Oakland, and see some trains around San Francisco before heading eastward along San Pablo Bay, and a visit to the San Ramos Branch and see some old film of smaller branch line operations. Next we have a Daylight section with a variety of films of Daylight trains in action, mostly with Daylight paint. Next we move to a segment that is east of Los Angeles and includes a lot of 30's and 1940's material mostly on the line to El Paso. There is a wide variety of train action in this segment. Next we see a variety of various SP images before closing out the show with several scenes of 4-6-2 2467 en route to Sacramento in 1999, and with 2472 at Hunters Point in 2001. There is something for everyone in this show, especially if you like SP Steam.

To All,
This year seems to be flying by and as I write this, spring has sprung and Easter nearly gone. As usual Stuart will be taking our stand to Derby 21st & 22nd April. Always a good show and as usual we will be at the top of the stairs so you can't miss us. The following weekend we will be at at the North Yorkshire Moors Spring gala. It is not often we venture this far north so take the advantage of riding an A4 and then coming down to the show area and seeing us. We will have all our usual gear, so it is an ideal opportunity to flick through the books and look at our range of dvds and T-shirts etc. I went on the Sir Nigel Gresley at the North Yorkshire Moors open day last year and had a great time. So catch the sound and the smells of steam, at what is a great family day as well, - I love to see the younger generations enjoying steam (after all, kids of today are tomorrow's customers we hope!) We do not usually do any shows in May but Stuart is a glutton for punishment (or was it me with my whip ) anyway he is going to Trainwest on 26th & 27th May. As this is specialising in America this year we hope to see lots of you there. So check out our event diary for the venues and check the links on our on line newsletter to the various show sites.
