EMD Locomotives
by Brian Solomon

In February 2005, General Motors announced its decision to sell its Electro-Motive Division (EMD), thus ending its 75-year association with one of the most renowned brands in railroading. Looking at the heritage of the venerable EMD in light of this momentous development, this monumental volume offers an overview of the great locomotive maker unprecedented in its scope and unparalleled in the spectacular quality of its photographs. Leading railroad author and photographer Brian Solomon provides an authoritative, comprehensive account of EMD's history, from its genesis in 1922 as the independent Electro-Motive Corporation, to GM's acquisition of the company in 1930, and on through the age of today's "superpower" locomotives. From the earliest 1920s railcars to the iconic mid-century F units, workhorse GP and SD locomotives, and Dash series; to the company's race with its chief competitor, General Electric, to reach 6,000 horsepower, EMDs complete story unfolds here in depth and detail, illustrated with a wealth of archival photos from across the country, as well as a remarkable collection of color photography from top railway photographers of the last half century.

Scarlet and Grey Memories
by Charles Smiley

Join us for a look back at the SP in the 1990s and in earlier views of the 1970s. See Coastline action along SoCal shores with mainline and local freight trains.
Visit White Hills, Lompoc and Santa Paula branch lines and follow the venerable Saugus Local and see its efficient crew keep schedules for freight customers on Metrolink’s busy Saugus Line.
We bring nostalgic SP action in the Tehachapis with lumber, oil-can, coal-drags and general freight. Remember the days when 5 front and 5 back were the “norm”. See the SP power that has been taken away by the 1996 UP-SP merger that has erased so much of the past.
More action and views from the San Fernando Valley, Cajon Pass and Beaumont Hill. These are the missing views that define the SP to every fan that misses the railroad that built California into the giant economy that remains today.
The vintage film scenes include sugar beet trains, lumber drags and early GE U-25, and U-33 power that has long since vanished from the SP. The Bakersfield Yard scenes are compared from 1993 and way back in 1971. See old ALCO and EMD power in SP’s finest days when units were clean and without graffiti.

Heritage Collection Volume 1

AMERICAN RAILROADS OF THE 1940s & '50s
5 Shows on 1 Disc!
Showcasing eastern and western lines, encompassing steam, early diesel, and electric motive power, this vintage film collection brings you a fascinating retrospective of our American railroading heritage. Included are:
On the Track. SP Cab Forwards, steam powered Daylights, and Black Widow diesels open this film about the railroad’s significant and ongoing role in making America a powerful nation. Among the railroads represented are Santa Fe, NYC, Pennsy, GN, Milwaukee, Rio Grande, New Haven, Monon, and Southern. In color.
Lifeline of the Nation. Steam dominates this WWII era film about how railroads supported the war effort. The few diesels shown are very early models. You’ll see Hiawathas and Box Cabs on the Milwaukee Road, steam and a GG-1 electric on the Pennsy, a rare streamlined Hudson on NYC’s Empire State Express, and more. In black & white.
225,000 Mile Proving Ground. This film takes its title from the 225,000 miles of track in service in 1953 when diesel power was replacing steam. The film shows many F-units and even shots of a Union Pacific gas turbine and Santa Fe billboard refrigerator cars. The dramatic close features a Rock Island F-unit passing right over the camera. In color.
Railroads and National Defense. Made during the Korean War period, this film shows how the railroads helped rearm the nation while still meeting America’s transportation needs. Pullmans and coaches provide troop transport while other trains haul tanks and trucks for shipment overseas. Featured railroads include the Katy, Texas & Pacific, IC, Seaboard, and UP. In color.
Mainline USA. This 1950s salute shows railroads meeting the challenge of economic growth by building hump yards, introducing welded rail and CTC, and designing safer trains and features great run-bys on the NYC, GN, D&RGW, Western Maryland, Pennsy, SF, UP, Rock Island, L&N, SP, B&O, and many others! In color.

Running a Steam Locomotive Volume 4

Neil Vodden and John Teshara ran the Southern Pacific’s Pacific #2472 when it was in daily service. Neil was widely respected as one of the most knowledgeable experts on SP steam motive power, and his love for the machine shines through in this very detailed close up of the fine points of passenger locomotive technology and train handling. When we filmed Neil and John and hostler John Sloan for Vol. II, there was no way to include everything they taught us. We present the additional material here for the true steam locomotive aficionado. This fully restored classic Pacific was built by Baldwin in 1921 and returned to operation by the Golden Gate Railroad Museum at the first California Railfair. The producer thinks the 2472 is the most beautiful locomotive he has ever seen.

GREAT MODEL RAILROADS ™ VOL. 55
by
Allen Keller Productions

Jerry Maori's Pennsylvania Railroad is huge, 4300 square feet of big time four track mainline! In fact this may be the largest home layout ever built! This HO layout runs from Chicago to New York and can handle more than 1200 pieces of rolling stock. It takes a train 25 minutes to run across the layout. Along the line there is a massive steel mill and a 30 foot deep Horseshoe Curve-two signature elements of Western Pennsylvania.
The Pennsy began in 1990 in a 2800 square foot basement. But then Jerry decided to add more layout space and more house and even a patio above. So the layout is now 3 inter-connected rooms with about 50% of the scenery completed. There are more than 20,000 trees on the layout.
This is a prototype-based HO layout with a lot of freelanced scenic elements. Creating realistic and evocative scenes is Jerry's favorite part of the hobby because this helps him remember special times and places
from his youth in the late 50s and early 60s.
Jerry enjoys sharing the layout with other modelers and using it to promote the hobby to the general public. Thousands of people have seen his Pennsylvania and marveled at his artistic ability.
Jerry will show you how to build with floral foam, use herbs and spices for ground cover, keep your track clean and use a scenery caddy.
The Pennsylvania is a Great Model Railroad because Jerry has found a way to remember, to re-create and to enjoy the glory days of the railroad in his basement.

SAND PATCH WEEKEND
by
Highball Productions

Still one of my favorite tapes and locations. Shot over the Memorial Day weekend of 1992, we caught trains at most of the famous locations, meets at the tunnel, a long valiant struggle up grade with the train finally stalling lots of different power from elderly B23's to new C40-BW's, GP4O's to SD50's. Lot's of different paint, from B&O blue to Chessie to Stealth and Bright Future. Sand Patch was everything we expected and more.

HIGHBALL OVER SILVER ZONE
by
Highball Productions

UP over the former Western Pacific between SaIt Lake City and Winnemucca, including the paired track with SP (pre merger) through Palisade Canyon. The "Trains" article called this line "Trains in a desolate landscape" and it sure is. We got out and about on the salt Flats, Wendover Hill, Arnold Loop, which to my mind is simply splendid, ranks up there with Crawford. You can see westbounds 13 or 14 miles away, then they round the loop and head over Silver Zone Pass. We Followed the line through the sage brush to Hogan tunnel, then across tine desert (VERY lonely) to Wells, Palisade Canyon and Wininemucca. Splendid desolation.

SUPERFLEET & SAGEBRUSH
by Highball Productions

(BNSF ON THE SELIGMAN SUB)
Warbonnets still rule on the Seligman Sub. Sure, the mergers shows, but there are still lots of units wearing one of the best looking paint schemes ever. The new 700 series GE's are out in force, looking superb in the beautiful winter sunshine. There is some new "Heritage" paint around, and not only on C44's! There are some solid sets of Cascade Green, but not a lot of blue and yellow. This is impressive, heavy duty main line railroading at its best, with howling, high speed double stacks, and roaring manifests dragging up-grade. We cover the line from Needles, CA to Winslow, AZ, including the big bridge at Topock, the Sacramento Wash, Kingman Canyon, Crozier Canyon, Seligman, the Crookton line relocation, Williams Junction, Supai Summit, Maine, Darling, Canyon Diablo, Sunshine and lots more.

STU’S MEANDERINGS

Once again, thanks to you all, we had a busy Christmas and did our very best to fulfil all your Christmas gifts. This was not helped by the UK Customs & Excise not releasing the t-shirts that had been ordered as they were requesting the ‘country of origin’ of the shirts. Once we had contacted our supplier and he had supplied a certificate showing the country of origin, we thought the UK customs would be happy and we would still be able to get all the t-shirts out to you well in time for Christmas, but....... we were wrong! Now the UK customs were saying that the stamp on the certificate was not an embossed seal and just an ink stamp and this was not sufficient. The State of California do not produce embossed stamps anymore this resulting in yet further hold ups. Eventually the UK customs, after speaking with the Chamber of Commerce and The Secretary of State and various telephone calls, finally released the t-shirts. Unfortunately this was just too late for your Christmas presents.
All t-shirts have now been sent out and have become New Year presents instead.

This problem has now been sorted and we should not have the problem for future orders. Thank you to all those customers for their patience.

Lets hope for a good, hassle free 2007!

Stu
