Working on the Railroad Author: Brian Solomon by LeRoy O. King, Jr.
The notion of working on a railroad has always carried its share of romance, taking in everything from the dreams of small boys to legends like John Henry and Casey Jones. The reality is far more complicated and often, as this book amply demonstrates, more interesting. This richly illustrated volume takes us behind the scenes to show what goes into keeping a railroad running in our era of computer-aided 6,000-horsepower diesel locomotion. Author and photographer Brian Solomon explains who does what and how, from dispatching and signaling to maintaining locomotives and driving trains. Everything it takes to keep a railroad running smoothly and safely-the daily decisions, the procedures that must be followed, the lowdown on track maintenance comes clearly into view as Solomon gives readers both a seat in the locomotive and the dispatchers view. Into this larger account he weaves anecdotes from railroad workers as well as the historical evolution of railway vocations, with descriptions of how each job has changed over time as well as marvellous archival imagery that illustrates these developments. Format: Hardbound Pages: 160 Length: 8.25w x 10.625h

HERITAGE SERIES FROM THE CAMERA OF EMERY GULASH Things were a little different on the Penn Central during every one of the eight years of its brief existence. By mid 1971, nearly all the locomotives of the predecessor Pennsylvania and New York Central railroads had been repainted into sombre dark, dark Brunswick green. The railroad was mired deeper and deeper in bankruptcy, as a new national rail passenger carrier, Amtrak, was starting to emerge from the dark shadows of the PC’s paint scheme following its launching on May 1st, 1971. Emery Gulash had his movie cameras trained on the rail action. He starts with a series of scenes in America’s Railroad Capital, Chicago, as Amtrak and Penn Central trains burnish the rails in and out of Union Station. The old Michigan Central depot at Detroit serves as an anchor for Emery, as he returns again and again from his travels to photograph trains at the formidable structure. Amtrak demonstrates its United Aircraft Turbotrain at Niles and Kalamazoo. Toledo comes in for its share of pulsating train operations, as do Ypsilanti, Dearborn, Jackson, Chelsea, New Buffalo, Ann Arbor, Westland, and Delphi Mills, Michigan. Our very full program winds up with scenes of two special passenger trains operated in November 1972 by the Chessie System for General Motors executives bound for a business conference in West Virginia.
