Pennsylvania Railroad’s Broadway Limited
In 1912, the Pennsylvania Railroad renamed its 10-year-old Pennsylvania Special passenger train the Broadway Limited. The New York-to-Chicago service would develop into one of the most celebrated trains in the annals of American railroading. Joe Welsh (Travel by Pullman, 2005) presents a marvelously illustrated account of the Broadways development, various motive power, and amenities, from the heavyweight era through the creation of Amtrak. Illustrated throughout with archival color and black-and-white photography, period ads, and timetables, this trip back to the halcyon era of train travel also features major players in the train's development, describes the Broadways contemporary competitors and other trains in PRR's "Blue Ribbon Fleet," and examines the train's streamlining initiated in 1938. The result is a fitting tribute to an icon of American transportation.

Alco's HH Series
The American Locomotive Co.’s introduction to the diesel locomotive came from the industry practice of commercial steam locomotive builders supplying carbodies to electric locomotive builders, such as General Electric Co. and Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. In 1927, GE decided to bring all of its locomotive work in-house and build complete locomotives at its Erie, Pa., plant. This ended GE’s commercial partnership with Alco, which had been in effect for 30 years. As a result, for Alco to remain a diesel locomotive builder, it had to have its own manufacturing facilities at Schenectady, N.Y. So Alco acquired the McIntosh & Seymour Corp. in 1928. By 1930, it offered a line of 300- & 600-hp locomotives. This line soon developed into what is known today as the High Hood or HH series of locomotives. Between 1932 and 1940, Alco built 176 HH units, ranging from 600 to 1,000 horsepower, for a wide cross-section of America’s railroads. Even today, 60 years later, a handful of the units remain in service at industrial operations across the country. This 120-page softcover book covers these pioneering diesels in text, 37 color and 293 b&w photographs, ads, and drawings in the style you’ve come to expect from Withers Publishing.

The Ontario Northland Railway serves the expanding mining, timber and pulp & paper industries of north Ontario. It also provides a vital link to the Inuits and Cree people who inhabit the isolated communities around St James Bay. In 1999 the ONR took delivery of 6 SD75i locomotives. The SD75i locos have 6 powered axles and produce 109,150 lbs of tractive effort. The ‘i’ means isolated cab which makes them much quieter and more comfortable. Join the engineer as we travel the Temagami Sub. Learn how the snow and cold affect the operations and see the train lineside as it travels through this picturesque part of Ontario. This is a fascinating insight into the Ontario Northland Railway.

Gary Hoover has built another masterpiece. With this layout he’s gone back in time to Aug. 29, 1951 to model the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe with spectacular western scenery. The Santa Fe runs from Chicago to San Bernardino, California. The scenes were built using photos to get the exact placement of mountain peaks, landmark structures and track alignments. About 95% of the structures are scratchbuilt, and many have interiors. As you might guess Gary tries to follow exact Santa Fe practices including signals, train consists and schedules. One interesting element is the helper operation between San Bernardino and Summit. In addition to the Santa Fe you’ll see trains from the Union Pacific and some extra foreign road traffic at Dearborn station. The area around the station captures the look of Chicago in the 1950s. At San Bernardino you’ll see the massive station, roundhouse and locomotive shops. You can see Gary’s craftmanship in everything from his weathering techniques to his highly detailed structures.Gary shows you how to make a custom backdrop, add a switch panel, make Joshua trees, and build resistance wheelsets.

The sawmill that time forgot. An action-packed look at an industrial survivor. The fascinating story of North America's last commercial mill still powered by steam. Screaming machines, gut-instinct, quick-decisions, and steam power. This is industrial action the way it once was. Hidden away in the lush forest of Oregon's Coastal Range is a 1930's-era sawmill almost untouched by time. Every morning the steam whistle of the feisty Hull-Oakes Lumber Company echoes off the nearby trees. The vintage steam-powered equipment is again fired-up to process old-fashioned long and large timber of Douglas fir for the world market. Explore all the details of this fascinating mill from log pond to head rig. Everything from steam engines and boilers right down to the old straddle-carriers that scoot around the lumber yard. You'll crawl underneath for rare views of the mill works. You'll venture into the woods with the loggers for a first-hand look at forest operations. Thoroughly entertaining and educational. 112-mins. BONUS: Servicing the mill is a 100 year-old rail line built by the Southern Pacific RR. What better way for us to get to the mill than to ride in the cab of the mill train. Adding to the intrigue is the Willamette & Pacific's locomotive #1801, an old Southern Pacific GP-9 decorated in its historic "black widow" paint scheme.
