New Books From MBI

Canadian Pacific Railway

In addition to examining the prehistory leading to CPRs incorporation in 1881 and its current status as one of the continents leading carriers, Murray explains the colossal geographic obstacles overcome by CPRs founders; motive power and rolling stock through depression, war, and peacetime; renowned diversificarion efforts that included a passenger ship line, an airline serving four continents, a chain of four-star hotels, and western mining operations; and the colorful characters who laid the groundwork that made CPR what is today. Marvelous photography illustrates the national icon that began as a railway, became a global transportation system, and evolved into a diversified industrial conglomerate before settling into its role as a respected carrier.

New Books From WITHERS

EMD’s SW1500 Second-Generation Workhorse

Following a long progression of end-cab switchers beginning in 1939, EMD's SW1500 model was introduced at the zenith of switcher production, the 1960s and 1970s. Featuring the builder's newly introduced 645-series prime mover, the model offered a unit that was suitable for yard, local, and even road freight service. During the model's 8 year production, no distinct changes took place, but options specified by the 58 customers, such as truck style, fuel tank capacity, and handrail placement, divided the production into 8 separate groups. This 120-page softcover book covers these pioneering diesels in text, photographs, and drawings. Major operators included.

Steam To Janakpurdham
by Highball Productions

Tipong Coal Mine is located in Northeast India, on the border with Burma, and for the moment runs the oldest steam locomotive in regular service in the world, and a Darjeeling B class. Living on borrowed time, this 2 foot gauge railway takes coal from the mine through the jungle to a truck loading facility. Far from tourist destinations, this seldom visited little line is full of charm and character! As soon as they have the money, two bridges will be rebuilt, the coal will move by truck and this delightful little railway will die. The Janakpur Railway runs from Jayanagar, India to Janakpurdham, Nepal. This 2’ 6” gauge line has now dieselized, but we rode and taped a chartered steam train, with an 0-6-2 Hunswell Clarke side tank, built in 1930. We were only allowed to stay in Nepal for one night because of terrorists! The festival of Shiva was going on in Janakpurdham during our visit, and there were thousands of people on the station waiting for the diesel train, many of them rode on the roof and sides, and on flat cars on our chartered train. Run by’s, the ride from the train (and the roof) and a look at the people. An entertaining look at a charming little railway!

I know it seems rather early for 2007 calendars whilst we’re basking in this heat but as you can see, we are taking on a larger range this year. Consequently if you want to be sure to have your 1st choice of calendar next year, you should order early as some maybe out of stock nearer Christmas.
In the meantime, enjoy the sunshine and the heat where ever you are!
