East to Green River
by Highball Productions

We start at Peterson on the Overland Route heading east on Union Pacific's transcontinental main line between Weber Canyon, Utah and Green River, Wyoming. The mountains of Utah are dusted with snow and the snow is with us as we start into into Wyoming where more snow gentle falls in the bleak landscape. The SD70ACe's are out and about, we catch the Western Pacific unit leading. UP has painted one of the locos in Western Pacific colours to commemorate their merger in 1982. They have also painted 2 others in heritage paint, Katy and Mopac, with 3 others planned. Lots of C44-ACTE's are also evident on a variety of trains. Enjoy the bright winter conditions with some light snow and heavy UP action.
Highball starts this programme by explaining some of the differences between the locos, which is a great help if like me you find it difficult distinguishing the sometimes subtle changes. This is railfanning in an area you probably will not visit so sit back and let Highball transport you to Utah & Wyoming.

Simplon /Sempione
by EK Verlag

In 2006 the Simplon tunnel celebrates its 100th anniversary. Measuring 19.8 km in length, the structure lies at the heart of the important cross-Alpine railway line between Lausanne/Spiez and Domodossola via Brig. 3 films have been compiled especially for the centenary. The first is black & white and was produced in 1955. This 16 minute film was commissioned by SBB for the 50th birthday of the line. 25 years later SBB and BLS commisioned a 21 minute colour film portraying the history and future of the line. These 2 documentaries from the archives of SBB Historic are rounded off by a brand new production – a 46 minute account of the Simplon today by Raphael Suder. Together, they provide a superb record of 100 years of railway history.
In the past, iconic trains like the Simplon-Orient-Express or the TEE used to cross the Alps on the Simplon route. Today the sleek dual-system Cisalpino trains offer fast services between Switzerland and Italy. The way goods trains are operated changed with the entry into the market of new providers. In December 2007, the opening of the Lötschberg base tunnel will raise the importance of the Simplon even further.
See these interesting and varied railway operations on the Simplon, with fascinating helicopter shots showing the remarkable setting of the line in the beautiful Alpine panorama between Lake Geneva and Lago Maggiore.

GREAT MODEL RAILROADS ™ VOL. 53
by Allen Keller Productions

The Conrail New Jersey Division of Matt Snell and Debie Baker packs a lot of railroad into a 40 x 24 foot basement. Matt and Debie have captured the look and the gritty feel of the areas around Newark, the Northeast Corridor, the chemical plants and the high speed commuter lines. In addition to Conrail you'll see trains from Amtrak, New Jersey Transit and the Susquehanna. The railroad is run much like the prototype in every possible way. Matt and Debie follow the Northeast Operating Rules that the railroads of New Jersey use. The layout is controlled by signals and dispatchers and runs with different schedules for day and night. Heavy traffic is one hallmark of New Jersey railroading. An active staging yard is one way to accomplish that. The yard is really a fiddle yard where locomotives and complete consists are changed out during an operating session rather than in between sessions. Matt will show you how to use make-up to weather equipment, add sound, make signs, create a timetable and detail diesels.

SANTA FE COMBO

Step back to 1995 for Santa Fe's last days of independent operations before its merger with Burlington Northern. ACROSS THE HEARTLAND - Stretching from the greater Chicago area to Fort Madison, Iowa lies the Chillicothe Sub, a double-tracked ribbon of rail that was home to Santa Fe's hottest trains. Warbonnets leading high-speed trains are seen at favorite spots such as McCook Junction and Edelstein Hill—the line's most famous location. Plus scenes at Galesburg and Cameron where Santa Fe and Burlington Northern tracks cross over one another and more drama at Fort Madison where trains are seen crossing the Mississippi River on the railroad's impressive bridge there. COUNTDOWN TO MERGER - Tracing the action on the Marceline Sub from Fort Madison, Iowa to Kansas City, Missouri. Overhead bridges offered excellent views of Santa Fe's hottest trains. Thirty miles of Joint operations with Norfolk Southern provided plenty of excitement as trains from both roads raced over the line. On September 21, 1995, Santa Fe's last full day, we viewed the single-tracked Missouri River Bridge and headed into Kansas City to reach the end of the Marceline Sub—and the end of an era.

Thank you for ALL your good wishes

I have been overwhelmed by the cards and get well messages I have received. People have been so kind and I am most grateful for the prayers & get well wishes. I am pleased to say that the surgery is well behind me now and I am gently getting back into the office routine. Stuart and the girls have worked really hard and managed extremely well without me over the last few weeks. Stuart has been doing all the exhibitions and thanks everyone for making them so enjoyable.
