Since the first edition was published in 1995 much has changed. This all new edition not only incorporates all those changes, mergers, ownership changes and abandonment's but also includes for the first time the interurban electric railroads and logging railroads. The Atlas shows all currently operated common carrier, tourist and major industrial railroads along with abandoned routes.
Good news for SPV's Atlases
We have updated several of our atlases recently and will continue to do so at the rate of probably two a year for the next few years adding interubans and altering ownership where necessary as we go. But many of you have asked will you produce similar atlases of Canada? The answer is YES! Mike Walker has started work on it. Later this year we hope to bring out our first volume covering British Columbia.

The Great Western CD has been unavailable for the last two years and Peter Handford has asked us if we would like to reissue it. Of course we gladly accepted. It would be a crying shame not to have the sounds of the Great Western available. So if you do not have this CD sit back close your eyes and bring your memories alive.

The New Haven had just 1,800 miles of trackage at its height in 1950, but it carried more passengers than any other railroad in the history of the U.S. rail industry. Its routes ran between the major metropolitan iirciis of New York City iind Boston, but also ran tourist operations to Cape Cod, Hyannis, Woods Hole, and boat connections to Martha's Vineyard; ski trains to the Berkshires; and joint trains to Washington, D.C., and Canada. New' Haven Passenger Trains chronicles the history of this storied railroad. Also depicted are New Haven uniforms, dinnerware, stations and terminals (including both Grand Central Terminal and Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan), and interior views of cars, providing a dramatic visual account of train travel's heyday and subsequent decline. Period ads, timetables, and route maps are featured, as well as discussion ofAmtrak, CDOT, and MBTA operations on former New Haven routes today. Hardcover - 8.25" x 10.63" - 160 pages

Cajon Pass has long been recognised as one of the finest train watching locations in North America. Located north of San Bernardino California, the Pass is used by Union Pacific and Burlington Northern, Santa Fe for their principal trans continental routes into the Los Angeles Basin. Union Pacific’s former Southern Pacific line runs from West Colten yard to Palmdale and Tehachapi and UP has trackage rights on BNSF’s line from San Bernardino to Barstow. Heavy traffic and scenic locations like the famed Sullivan’s Curve, together with a rainbow of paint schemes from both UP and BNSF make Cajon a railfan’s paradise. Taped in April 1998, the hills are green, there are bright blue skies and the mountains are snow covered. By 1958, diesels had largely replaced steam power on U. S. railroads. But in Canada, both Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways continued to run steam locomotives. They, too, would be dieselized by 1960 but in 1958 each offered classic railroading in the grand style. Donald J. Krofta made four trips to Ontario that year to film them on 16mm. In his film, shot at Windsor, Stratford, Palmerston, London, Sudbury and other locations, you'll find many passenger and freight trains under steam power. CN steam shown includes 4-6-0's, 4-6-2's, 4-6-4's, 4-8-2's, 4-8-4's, 2-8-0's and 2-8-2's. CP power includes 2-8-0's, 2-8-2's . 4-6-2's and 4-6-4's. A few diesels also appear. A formidable barrier confronts all trains on the BNSF's main east-west route between Chicago and Los Angeles. Boasting spectacular southwestern scenery, seven majestic bridges and located between Belen and Mountainair, New Mexico . . . it's the rugged and remote ABO CANYON. Captured in Abo Canyon during a fleeting window of time following the merger of the BN and the Santa Fe, this video features a once in-a-lifetime collection of motive power types and paint schemes. The classic Santa Fe red and silver Warbonnets and the Blues join Burlington Northern green. A new BNSF design reminiscent of the old Great Northern orange and green paint scheme enters the scene. See the Dash 9-44CW, Dash 8-40BW, SD40-2, SD75M and others. With stunning photography and hard-to-reach locations, WB records history showcasing a combination of power and paint never to be witnessed again. A truly unforgettable piece of American railroading. Many of you will have seen in the March edition of Trains magazine the article about Abo Canyon and how BNSF is hoping to have a second mainline track squeezed into the New Mexico Gulch. No doubt after it is completed in 2007 we will bring you a new dvd showing the improved line but for now why not see how the singletrack through the canyon operates. This dvd is offered in this newsletter at a very special price to coincide with the trains article.

Chuck Ellis’ Great Northwestern & Pacific was inspired by a love of the mountainous Pacific Northwest. Chuck has skillfully captured the look of gaping canyons that touch the floor and towering pinnacles with his masterful use of plaster and paint. His walkaround plan takes the viewer on a journey from Duluth, Minnesota to Seattle, Washington in the 1950s. The layout occupies 1500 square feet. This HO layout was designed by Chuck without the use of a formal trackplan. He simply built what he saw in his mind. He knew where he wanted mountains, towns and even a small narrow gauge line--all contribute to the overall scenic effect. Because the GN&P owns no equipment the line runs locomotives and cars from many different roads particularly the Great Northern. Chuck is a master builder of highly detailed structures. He attributes this interest to his familys long history in the construction business. The railroad is full of fabulous craftsman kits. The layout has been expanded into adjacent areas since work began in 1991. Thirty years of trial and error allow Chuck the freedom to tear out what he doesn’t like and then start over. Chuck will show you how to paint drivers, make river banks, create peeling paint, and build pine trees. The Great Northwestern & Pacific is a Great Model Railroad because Chuck has created the look and feel of a visit to the Pacific Northwest.
