MRL Montana Mainline Part 2...Helena to Sandpoint

MRL Montana Mainline Part 2...Helena to Sandpoint

£22.00

In MRL Montana Mainline Part 2, we return to Helena in the dead of winter as trains prepare to do battle with Mullan Pass. A strong Canadian storm system slammed into the Rockies sending the mercury below zero while a quintet of MRL's EMD SD70ACe's put on a fantastic show shoving heavy trains to the summit. This is a mountain railroading at its best with 2.2% grades, numerous curves and high trestles.

Shot in January and July of 2011, you will see the MRL taking on Mullan Pass in all types of weather as it climbs to the continental divide at Blossburg via the famous Mullan Tunnel. The action doesn't stop there, as trains race west along the 3rd, 4th and 10th subdivisions through the fantastic scenery that is the hallmark of Montana. Catch trains as they follow the course of the Clark Fork River and scale high above the treetops on Evaro Hill. Our tour concludes as we head west through the Bitterroot Mountains along the banks of the Clark Fork to Sandpoint, Idaho where MRL joins BNSF's busy "Funnel."

A great variety of trains run over the line including coal, grain, mixed manifests and MRL's daily gas train. From perfect sunny skies, through thunderstorms and winter's arctic chill, this is a trip to MRL country you won't soon forget! Raw horsepower and beautiful scenery combine again for two great hours of entertainment. by 7idea Productions 2 Hours 4 mins * colour * narration * Features narration on/off * Widescreen

The Pokey - Elkhorn Grade

Norfolk Southern’s Pocahontas District recently had clearances raised for double stacks as part of the Heartland Project. Elkhorn grade between Bluefield and Iaeger is the steepest part of the Pokey, giving even NS’s latest SD70ACe’s a workout with heavy coal trains as they wind through the valleys and through the small towns of West Virginia. This is helper country, with two to three units pushing heavy trains up the grades. by Highball Productions

Union Pacific’s Clinchfield Challenge

Union Pacific’s Clinchfield Challenge

£15.00

Union Pacific Challenger 3985 made its first-ever venture east of the Mississippi River in November 1992 when it traveled off line onto CSX rails. This historic event was prompted by the 50th running of the Santa Claus Special, a tradition of the former Clinchfield Railroad that was being carried on by Clinchfield successor CSX. Each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, Santa and his helpers would ride the special train, tossing candy and gifts to the children of the coal mining towns that lined the route from Shelbiana, Kentucky to Kinsgport, Tennessee.

At one time the Clinchfield Railroad owned six of the big Challenger engines and used them to haul Appalachian coal. It seemed appropriate then for UP and CSX to work jointly to bring a Challenger back onto Clinchfield rails again. Before that could happen, the 3985 would have to undergo a name and numbering change. Leaving UP rails in Memphis, Tennessee, the Challenger traveled to Huntington, West Virginia, where it was converted to ÏClinchfield 676.Ó After leading the Santa Claus Special, ÏClinchfield 676Ó ran an employee special out of Kingsport. The 4-6-6-4 is a sight to behold as it works up through the twisting, rugged Appalachian Mountains. The sound of the steam whistle echoing through the hollows will take you back in time, and the small coal mining towns that dot the route will remind you of another era in American railroading. All the excitement of big Clinchfield steam is here for you to savor and enjoy!

2012 Carstens On30 Annual

2012 Carstens On30 Annual

£14.50

Tony Koester

You've waited all year for it... The 2012 Carstens On30 Annual! Now in our seventh year of publication and featuring 116 pages of exclusive On30 model railroading content. We have everything you have come to expect from the On30 Annual, including gorgeous layout tours, in-depth construction features, and practical historical features. Building is fundamental to On30 and this year’s Annual is packed with great projects. Peter Reisiger takes us step by step through building Evanoff Pattern & Foundry. But that’s not all! Bill Iwan builds a heavy duty On30 flatcar, Jim Schulz and Dave Wingrove provide two fun railbus builds, Sam Swanson shows us how to spruce up commercial turnouts, Bob Bennett builds a waterfront, Al Sohl hides the edge of his layout and expands his yard with a mirror/bridge combo and Gil Flores shares his Mack wrecker and shows us a great technique for rusty metal. And that’s just a partial listing!

The Annual is known for great layouts and the 2012 issue is not exception. We are pleased to present for the first time in print the fabulous Cranberry Wharf by Danish modeler Troels Kirk. This layout is the talk of the internet, but wait until you see the rich beautiful photos in print. But we don’t stop there! You’ll also find Steve Austin’s Elkhorn Timber & Iron which can be visited during the 2013 NMRA National in Atlanta, and Chris Comport’s latest profession layout build, the Crown Valley District Ry. & Monarch Mining Railroad and professional structure builder Dennis Dunning shares his home layout.

Like plans to build from? Who doesn’t! We are happy to give the On30 modeler several detailed drawings this year. How about the entire business district of Sundance, Wyoming? Vic Worthington gives us the block of great false front buildings. And Chris Lane has an On30-sized water tank based on the D&RGW tanks at Villa Grove and Jacks Cabin.

Finally, did we mention layouts? Yes we did, but we understand that not everyone has space for room -sized monsters. That’s OK, because we have you covered there too. Buzz Allen’s diorama is a contest winner, yet is only 2 foot by 4 foot. Likewise, Lowell Ross’ Soggy Bottom Mining Company is super-detailed in a compact 14 inches by 6 foot, yet like Buzz’s, can be incorporated into a larger layout someday. We even have a micro layout from Tad Dowdy that could fit on a hat!

BNSF ON THE BANKS OF THE MISSISSIPPI

BNSF ON THE BANKS OF THE MISSISSIPPI

Ref: D361

Price: £21.00

Come along with C. Vision Productions and tour the St. Croix Subdivision of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe. We document the St. Croix Sub as it follows the Mississippi River from La Crosse, Wisconsin to St. Croix Junction south of St. Paul, Minnesota. This mostly double track main line is a part of the BNSF's northern Transcontinental Mainline from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest. With the addition of the major hub of Minneapolis and St. Paul, this line has plenty of high speed railroad action!

Watch 60 mile per hour intermodal trains waste no time hauling high priority freight. Other mainline general freight trains and grain trains also make their way along the St. Croix Sub. You will be amazed by the variety of motive power. Older SD-40 dash 2's are still common. General Electric Dash 9-44CW's and newer GE ES-44DC's also head up trains in both the Heritage 2 and the new "Swoosh" style paint schemes. We also capture ex-Santa Fe GE power including Dash 8-40BW's!

This subdivision is full of spectacular scenery. Sit back as we take you high atop of Buena Vista Park in Alma, Wisconsin. This location provides an awesome vantage point to watch trains rolling through this picturesque river town. We also capture several trains crossing the St. Croix River lift bridge in Prescott, Wisconsin. The Mississippi River valley provides an array of tree covered bluffs creating beautiful backdrops for the numerous trains that travel this line.

Combining the natural beauty of the Mississippi River valley, and the images of BNSF trains, this video is one that you will want to watch again and again!

Trains across the Midwest

Trains across the Midwest

Ref: D358

Price: £21.00

The Midwest is full of railroad action with Short Lines, Regionals and the big Class One's!

In this volume we first travel to southeastern Nebraska. Here we capture Union Pacific trains in and around the community of Davenport. Trains led with C44AC-CTE's, SD90-43AC's and SD-60M's are seen traveling through this scenic section of the U.R's Marysville Subdivision.

Then it's off to western Minnesota. On the border of Fargo, North Dakota is the city of Moorhead. It is here that the BNSF's KO and Prosper Subdivisions join at a point called Moorhead Junction. This busy spot hosts numerous BNSF trains on a daily basis. Along with main line freights and coal trains, many yard jobs and transfers use this junction to get to and from the large yard in the adjacent town of Dilworth, MN. From rebuilt GP-30's to the new SD-70ACe's, you will be treated to some great BNSF trains at this location!

Finally, we head a little further north to catch the action on a newly formed shoreline. The Dakota Northern operates over ex-BNSF tracks from Grafton to Walhalla, North Dakota. We capture this line only months after its birth to watch as rebuilt GP- 10's take care of moving grain, potatoes, coal and ethanol. The railroad even treated us to adding the Minnesota Northern's caboose to the train!

Awesome mainline action, diverse Short Lines and Regionals make the Midwest one of the best places to watch trains. C.Vision takes you there in "Trains Across the Midwest"

VIA F'S IN THE ROCKIES

VIA F'S IN THE ROCKIES

Ref: D355

Price: £25.00

Via F's In The Rockies is loaded with great scenery in Western Canada, and includes scenes of the "Canadian" on the original route over the Canadian Pacific which includes the Kicking Horse Pass. You will follow two runs of the Canadian between Field and the Bow Valley in the spring of 1986 with Via Rail FP9's in charge. Usual power was 1 A-Unit and 2 B-Units on this train. The 50's era coaches and dome cars are classic with these old F-units. Next we move to Jasper and the Canadian National trackage. Here we spend several days and see the "Super Continental" which operated over this route, as well as the "Skeena" which was combined with the Super Continental between Jasper and Edmonton, as the two trains were literally coupled together with an F-Unit in the consist behind the Super Continental. After spending many days in the Jasper area we head back to the CPR and see some scenes in the Fraser Canyon area before heading back to Kicking Horse Pass. We follow Ex-CPR #6557 over the Pass for one of its last journeys. In 1986 this video had very limited narration, and now it is more informative, and includes the disposition of most of the units you see in the video. There is also information on the 2 Spiral Tunnels which are as famous as the "Canadian" that no longer runs over this CPR trackage. Today the "Canadian" operates through Jasper, replacing the Super Continental. This video is now quite historic, and the scenery is not too shabby either. 60 mins * colour * narrated

RAIL INDUSTRY FILMS

RAIL INDUSTRY FILMS

Ref: D352

Price: £25.00

This selection of old films contains 4 different films that are 16mm original company films. The first is a Steel Company film and is all about the testing of their special wheel sets(Trucks), made for the railroads. This shows a test car, and several trains including steam and diesel. It was made in the 1940's or early 1950's. The second one(Also in Color), is called "The Power to Stop", and is about the brakes on passenger train coaches, and other cars. This shows a Milwaukee Road Hiawatha style engine pulling the test car up to 100 mph, and the car is uncoupled at speed to make the brake tests. Both of these films have narration. The third film is a Pennsylvania Railroad Black and White silent film called "On to Washington". This rare film was made in the 1930's, and shows PRR routes all over the midwest, then concentrates on Washington DC sightseeing. This film was silent, and we added background music. It does show some passenger car interiors which is quite interesting, such as the Porter, the dining car, and lounge cars. The fourth film is a gem, by New York Central called "The Steam Locomotive". It is 20 minutes and Black and White. It is all about the famous New York Central Hudson(4-6-4), one of the most recognizable engines on the planet at the time. You see servicing the engine, as well as backshop work, roundhouse inspections, and other aspects that go into making these engines run properly. And there are several operating views from inside the cab to side-by-side scenes in action. The Steel films are in color while the PRR and NYC(1948), are in black and white. 90 mins

We bring back the Santa Fe with great action in many So.Cal. locations. This parade of power over the decades is a tribute to one of the most popular western railroads of all time. The scenes are taken from old movie film shot by many railfans. The material from the early 90s was shot on video before the end of the Santa Fe as an independent company.

The paint schemes shown are all the phases from the early black with white stripes and beautiful passenger F-units with freight bluebonnet power and the later yellow bonnets.

*1950s-94 *Tehachapi *Cajon Pass *Needles Sub *Stockton *Eastbay

The video of the 90s shows a revival of the red & silver warbonnet theme that the Santa Fe used to reclaim all the public recognition that their service deserved.

Many of the video scenes were selected from our retired videos on Cajon, Tehachapi and the Needles Subdivision. They represent a composite of the very best pre-merger Santa Fe scenes shot with multiple cameras. It's really amazing that the Santa Fe has been gone for over a decade now. We hope this video will renew your interest in her.

Empire Builders to Milwaukee

Empire Builders to Milwaukee

Ref: D344

Price: £22.00

Privately run intercity passenger service in Milwaukee was a thing of the past by early 1971. The Federal government had formed Amtrak to remove the burden of passenger service from the railroads and insure that core passenger routes remained active. By May 1st, when Amtrak rolled into Milwaukee, things had changed. Milwaukee Road's Hiawatha and C&NW's bi-level Streamliners were out, but Amtrak's Empire Builder was in. Direct rail service was now available all the way to Seattle, but one could no longer travel to Green Bay! All passenger service on C&NW rails was gone, but Amtrak did pick up some Chicago-Milwaukee trains over Milwaukee Road rails. These new trains looked different, too. Amtrak paint was months away and its first units were made up of mismatched heritage cars and engines that earned them the nickname "Rainbow" trains (BN green, GN orange and blue, Milwaukee yellow, Burlington silver, NP greens, and others). Their classic motive power included E-9s, F-3s, F-7s, and F-9s.

Empire Builders to Milwaukee takes you back to the six months preceding and following the start of Amtrak service in Milwaukee. You'll view the Morning Hiawatha and the C&NW bi-level Streamliners during their last winter and spring of operations as well as Amtrak's new Empire Builder and Chicago-Milwaukee corridor service. Also making appearances are freights (many pulled by venerable GP35s and GP9s) on the Milwaukee Road and Soo Line, the commuter Cannonball, and specials including Amtrak's Turbo Train on its national tour and the Great Circus Train of 1971. These exciting scenes were filmed at Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, Duplainville, Brookfield, Elm Grove, Wauwatosa, Oak Creek, West Bend, and other Milwaukee metro areas. There's plenty to enjoy in this fascinating tribute to Amtrak's early Empire Builders!

A tale of two railways, and the history of rail operations in Canada's Ottawa Valley. \nThe story of how the railways of the Ottawa Valley developed over the past 140 years. Ride with the crews of today's trains working through the valley on the Ottawa Valley Rail Link and the Ottawa Central Railway and learn the history of the railways in this part of Canada. To help efficiency during the war block signalling was introduced but not completed until 1947. As we continue to watch the working day on the current line we learn of mergers and how the railway is run today e.g. we see units being isolated, whilst running, for fuel efficiency - they are reconnected when extra power is needed for grades etc.\nThis is a fascinating insight into the working of the line and the winter snow gives an added zest leaving us with a real feeling for, and understanding of, railroading in this part of Canada. PENN CENTRAL 3

PENN CENTRAL 3

Ref: D331

Price: £20.00

HERITAGE SERIES FROM THE CAMERA OF EMERY GULASH

Things were a little different on the Penn Central during every one of the eight years of its brief existence. By mid 1971, nearly all the locomotives of the predecessor Pennsylvania and New York Central railroads had been repainted into sombre dark, dark Brunswick green. The railroad was mired deeper and deeper in bankruptcy, as a new national rail passenger carrier, Amtrak, was starting to emerge from the dark shadows of the PC's paint scheme following its launching on May 1st, 1971.

Emery Gulash had his movie cameras trained on the rail action. He starts with a series of scenes in America's Railroad Capital, Chicago, as Amtrak and Penn Central trains burnish the rails in and out of Union Station. The old Michigan Central depot at Detroit serves as an anchor for Emery, as he returns again and again from his travels to photograph trains at the formidable structure.

Amtrak demonstrates its United Aircraft Turbotrain at Niles and Kalamazoo. Toledo comes in for its share of pulsating train operations, as do Ypsilanti, Dearborn, Jackson, Chelsea, New Buffalo, Ann Arbor, Westland, and Delphi Mills, Michigan. Our very full program winds up with scenes of two special passenger trains operated in November 1972 by the Chessie System for General Motors executives bound for a business conference in West Virginia.

When the snow gets too high for the Flangers to remove snow from the rails, the second line of defense is called into action. The Spreader is deployed to remove large amounts of snow from the mainline and shove it off banks and bridges clearing the path for new snow to fall. With the nose blade down, the wings extended and a little speed, the Spreader will move a mountain of snow.

Harsh winters, temperatures well below freezing, snow falling forty eight inches in a single day and up to sixty five feet a year, have long been an obstacle to keeping trains rolling over the Sierra.
