Columbia River Gorge

Columbia River Gorge

£21.00

Part 1: Union Pacific’s Portland Sub

The mighty Columbia River carves its way through the Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest as it fashions much of the boundary between Oregon and Washington State. The Columbia River Gorge is rich in scenery from snow capped mountains to magnificent waterfalls. This is the backdrop for Union Pacific’s Portland Subdivision between Portland, Oregon and Hinkle Yard. Many manifest trains make their way to and from UP’s classification yard at Hinkle while expedited intermodal trains race between western ports in Portland, Tacoma and Seattle to major intermodal hubs in and around Chicago. With a gentle grade and many high-speed curves, this water-level route through the Cascade Mountains is ideal for long, heavy trains. Add the breath-taking scenery found along the gorge and you have the perfect recipe for great train watching. See UP's mighty SD90 MACs pounding the rails with 130 car potash trains! ES45AC's on the point of long double-stack trains! Vintage geeps in local service and much more, all in the spectacular setting of the Columbia River Gorge! This program was shot between June, 2011 and February, 2012.

"Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Battles the Snow"

Ref: S162HD

Price: £22.00

Durango, Colorado was buried under 36 inches of snow following several storms that had passed through the San Juan Mountains, the week of January 17, 2010. The railroad was snowed in. Cuts north of Rockwood were filled with snow, and a number of snow slides had run between Rockwood and Cascade Canyon. Machines of Iron was there to show you how the flanger train and the maintenance of way crews and their equipment handled the snow and got the railroad running again.

On Monday, January 25th, the first order of the day was to get the air line to the turntable thawed so engine #473 could leave the roundhouse, be turned and coupled to the snow Flanger train. We were on the way for this unique railroading experience.

A piece of maintenance of way equipment, called a Speed Swing, cleared the track ahead of the train. The flanger, then, pushed the deep snow further away from the right of way. The flanger wings are air operated and can be pushed out, or if obstacles appear, can be retracted by the wingmen. The train moved up the valley at 10 miles per hour as it pushed the snow aside.

Things went well, but trouble was waiting for us ahead as we were later stuck again. The snow even deeper. It was decided to uncouple the engine and run it light to Rockwood. The other speed swing, double 0 eight, was sent down to widen one side of the snow bank so the train could make it to Rockwood.

Even though this is a preserved steam operated railroad, it has no fewer operational challenges than the D&RGW did years ago when it operated the same right of way. The employees of the D&S are true professional railroaders who have a passion for this railroading gem in Southwestern Colorado, consequently, preserving the railroad's 130 year history so all interested may see and ride it.
