MRL Montana Mainline Part 2...Helena to Sandpoint

MRL Montana Mainline Part 2...Helena to Sandpoint

£22.00

In MRL Montana Mainline Part 2, we return to Helena in the dead of winter as trains prepare to do battle with Mullan Pass. A strong Canadian storm system slammed into the Rockies sending the mercury below zero while a quintet of MRL's EMD SD70ACe's put on a fantastic show shoving heavy trains to the summit. This is a mountain railroading at its best with 2.2% grades, numerous curves and high trestles.

Shot in January and July of 2011, you will see the MRL taking on Mullan Pass in all types of weather as it climbs to the continental divide at Blossburg via the famous Mullan Tunnel. The action doesn't stop there, as trains race west along the 3rd, 4th and 10th subdivisions through the fantastic scenery that is the hallmark of Montana. Catch trains as they follow the course of the Clark Fork River and scale high above the treetops on Evaro Hill. Our tour concludes as we head west through the Bitterroot Mountains along the banks of the Clark Fork to Sandpoint, Idaho where MRL joins BNSF's busy "Funnel."

A great variety of trains run over the line including coal, grain, mixed manifests and MRL's daily gas train. From perfect sunny skies, through thunderstorms and winter's arctic chill, this is a trip to MRL country you won't soon forget! Norfolk Southern’s Pocahontas District recently had clearances raised for double stacks as part of the Heartland Project. Elkhorn grade between Bluefield and Iaeger is the steepest part of the Pokey, giving even NS’s latest SD70ACe’s a workout with heavy coal trains as they wind through the valleys and through the small towns of West Virginia. Union Pacific’s Clinchfield Challenge

Union Pacific’s Clinchfield Challenge

£15.00

Union Pacific Challenger 3985 made its first-ever venture east of the Mississippi River in November 1992 when it traveled off line onto CSX rails. This historic event was prompted by the 50th running of the Santa Claus Special, a tradition of the former Clinchfield Railroad that was being carried on by Clinchfield successor CSX. Each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, Santa and his helpers would ride the special train, tossing candy and gifts to the children of the coal mining towns that lined the route from Shelbiana, Kentucky to Kinsgport, Tennessee.

At one time the Clinchfield Railroad owned six of the big Challenger engines and used them to haul Appalachian coal. It seemed appropriate then for UP and CSX to work jointly to bring a Challenger back onto Clinchfield rails again. Before that could happen, the 3985 would have to undergo a name and numbering change. Leaving UP rails in Memphis, Tennessee, the Challenger traveled to Huntington, West Virginia, where it was converted to ÏClinchfield 676.Ó After leading the Santa Claus Special, ÏClinchfield 676Ó ran an employee special out of Kingsport. The 4-6-6-4 is a sight to behold as it works up through the twisting, rugged Appalachian Mountains. The sound of the steam whistle echoing through the hollows will take you back in time, and the small coal mining towns that dot the route will remind you of another era in American railroading. All the excitement of big Clinchfield steam is here for you to savor and enjoy!

You've waited all year for it... The 2012 Carstens On30 Annual! Now in our seventh year of publication and featuring 116 pages of exclusive On30 model railroading content. We have everything you have come to expect from the On30 Annual, including gorgeous layout tours, in-depth construction features, and practical historical features. Building is fundamental to On30 and this year’s Annual is packed with great projects. Peter Reisiger takes us step by step through building Evanoff Pattern & Foundry. But that’s not all! Bill Iwan builds a heavy duty On30 flatcar, Jim Schulz and Dave Wingrove provide two fun railbus builds, Sam Swanson shows us how to spruce up commercial turnouts, Bob Bennett builds a waterfront, Al Sohl hides the edge of his layout and expands his yard with a mirror/bridge combo and Gil Flores shares his Mack wrecker and shows us a great technique for rusty metal. And that’s just a partial listing!

The Annual is known for great layouts and the 2012 issue is not exception. We are pleased to present for the first time in print the fabulous Cranberry Wharf by Danish modeler Troels Kirk. This layout is the talk of the internet, but wait until you see the rich beautiful photos in print. But we don’t stop there! You’ll also find Steve Austin’s Elkhorn Timber & Iron which can be visited during the 2013 NMRA National in Atlanta, and Chris Comport’s latest profession layout build, the Crown Valley District Ry. & Monarch Mining Railroad and professional structure builder Dennis Dunning shares his home layout.

Like plans to build from? Who doesn’t! We are happy to give the On30 modeler several detailed drawings this year. How about the entire business district of Sundance, Wyoming? Vic Worthington gives us the block of great false front buildings. And Chris Lane has an On30-sized water tank based on the D&RGW tanks at Villa Grove and Jacks Cabin.

Finally, did we mention layouts? Yes we did, but we understand that not everyone has space for room -sized monsters. That’s OK, because we have you covered there too. Buzz Allen’s diorama is a contest winner, yet is only 2 foot by 4 foot. Likewise, Lowell Ross’ Soggy Bottom Mining Company is super-detailed in a compact 14 inches by 6 foot, yet like Buzz’s, can be incorporated into a larger layout someday. We even have a micro layout from Tad Dowdy that could fit on a hat!

Horse Shoe Curve/Sand Patch Grade Combo

Horse Shoe Curve/Sand Patch Grade Combo

Ref: P13

Price: £18.00

Horse Shoe Curve and Sand Patch Grade are two Pennsylvania railroading landmarks of enormous popularity, with good reason. They share long history, challenging terrain, heavy traffic, and innovative technologies. Pentrex recorded these famous sites in the late 1980s and released two outstanding shows, both of which are included on this new combo DVD.

Horse Shoe Curve

Step back to 1989 when Conrail was running from 40-60 trains a day through the 3-track curve at this historic site in central Pennsylvania. Most of the action here is led by Conrail but Amtrak makes an appearance as well. The interesting mix of motive power you'll see here includes SD40s, SD40-2s, SD45-2s, and GE C30-7As. You'll travel to Alto Tower in Altoona, Benny, the Gallitzin Twin Tunnels, AR Tower, MO Tower in Cresson, but most of all you'll spend quality time at Horse Shoe Curve itself, the granddaddy of railfan locations! (75 minutes)

Sand Patch Grade

Old and new technologies intermingle on this remote yet important route through the Alleghenies. In 1990, when our show was recorded, this former B&O trackage was known as the Mainline Subdivision, a part of CSX's Chicago-to-Baltimore mainline. CSX trains battled their way upgrade through Brackens, Fairhope, Falls Cut Tunnel, Glencoe, the horse shoe curve at Mance, and Sand Patch Grade itself. You'll see a variety of motive power including GP30s, GP40s, SD50s, the CSX F-unit, and others in an assortment of paint schemes such as B&O, C&O, Clinchfield, Seaboard, Chessie, and classic CSX colors. You'll also tour the tower at Hyndman where vintage Armstrong levers were still in daily use and visit busy SA tower at the crest of Sand Patch Summit. Sand Patch Grade, rich in history, abounds in exciting mainline railroading! (60 minutes)

The Northeast Corridor was a modern commuter raceway when Pentrex set out to capture this busy line in 1992. So much great footage was filmed with Amtrak's cooperation that two videos were released giving viewers an exclusive, insider's look at Amtrak's pride and joy. Now both shows have been combined on one Combo DVD, bringing you the whole Northeast Corridor story. Included are:

New York City to Philadelphia

Focusing on this electrified heavily-trafficked portion of the line, our program brings you a fascinating mix of old and new technologies. Trains roar down the electrified mainline at speeds of up to 125 mph, governed by Automatic Block Signals and dispatched from Philadelphia. Yet manned block towers dating back to the turn of the century can still be found in use on the line. Experience over 150 Amtrak and commuter trains in action as you visit Penn Station, Hudson Tower, Newark, Trenton, Princeton Junction, and Zoo Interlocking and the venerable "A" and Zoo towers on your trek from New York City to Philadelphia. (80 minutes)

Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.

Now you can relive the excitement of this thrilling steam adventure!

On Day One, you’ll follow the beautiful train as it heads south out of Denver on the Joint Line and into Canon City. Day Two brings you the sights and sounds of steam marching through the depths of the Royal Gorge, across the hanging bridge, up along the banks of the winding Arkansas River, blasting up grade to conquer 10,000-foot high Tennessee Pass, and heading down through Glenwood Canyon, a spectacular achievement! Day three features a high-speed chase across Utah’s magnificent desert landscapes, running past Green River and into Helper. In an awesome display of power, the 844 battles steep grades of Castle Gate and Soldier Summit. Cajon Pass and Tehachapi Loop

Cajon Pass and Tehachapi Loop

Ref: P1

Price: £18.00

Cajon Pass and Tehachapi Loop - these two Southern California railroading landmarks draw railfans from around the world seeking to experience the engineering ingenuity, spectacular scenery, and steady parade of trains that make these locations so appealing.

Never was that more true than in 1986 when this program was originally filmed. At that time most trains still had cabooses, Southern Pacific oil cans (the 'Tank Train') still ran over Tehachapi, and many Santa Fe and Southern Pacific locomotives sported the short-lived red and yellow 'Kodachrome' merger paint scheme. You could still see pure sets of blue and yellow Santa Fe power, including EMD SD45s, F45s, and FP45s and GE U36Cs and C30-7s. Southern Pacific also ran pure sets of its locomotives, including SD45s and 'tunnel motors,' and Amtrak ran the Southwest Chief and the Desert Wind over Cajon with F40PH locomotives. The Santa Fe dispatcher’s office was still located in the San Bernardino depot, and the Mojave depot was still in use.

These are the sights of the past but you can experience them and more in this incredible show. Ride a Union Pacific helper pushing a 12,000-ton coal train over Cajon. Visit the Santa Fe dispatcher’s office in the San Bernardino depot and the hump yard and locomotive servicing facilities in Barstow. Thrill to cab rides on Cajon and Tehachapi. It’s all here for you to savor again!

Heavy Railroad Action Around the "Iron City"

Imagine a place where the railroading includes mountain helper districts, long tunnels, countless bridges, triple track mainlines, heavy industrial switching, an active interlocking tower, and well over a hundred trains a day! That's Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of the busiest railroading centers in America, with possibly the widest variety of operations to be found in a single region.

The last months of Conrail's Pittsburgh routes were captured just prior to Norfolk Southern's takeover in 1999. "Big Blue" provided enough traffic to keep any railfan happy. CSX played an equally important role in this region and you'll find plenty of dramatic CSX action. Plus, the heavy-industrial-hauling Union Railroad also contributed exciting scenes. You'll see switchers toiling in a massive steel mill, Amtrak passenger trains on the mainlines, an unusual coal-hauling railroad, and even freight barges on the rivers around the city. Here's your opportunity to experience heavy-duty railroading during several seasons of the year as we tour the best spots around the "Three Rivers City" before the 1999 mergers that changed the face of the area's operations.

Steel Rails, Midnight Sun - Summer on the Alaska Railroad

Stretching from Seward to Fairbanks, rising from tidewater up 2,360 feet to the Continental Divide, and running nonstop during sunless days and perpetual twilight, the Alaska Railroad is a hard-working operation that serves a land of extreme weather and incredible beauty. In the mid-1990s, filmmaker Patrick Hunstiger captured the fascination of the Alaska Railroad in a 3-part series of VHS videos and now Pentrex is proud to bring these programs to you on DVD, beginning with Volume 1: Steel Rails, Midnight Sun - Summer on the Alaska Railroad.

In 1993, the Alaska Railroad could field up to 17 trains covering up to 3,300 train miles in any given 24-hour period. These included two passenger extras; overnight freights and freight expresses; oil tanker, unit coal, and rock trains; work extras; and others. The ARR’s all-GM locomotive fleet, which sported three different color schemes, was made up of GP40-2s, GP49s, GP38-2s, GP35s, GP7s, and MP15s. Cabooses could still be seen at the ends of some trains.

You’ll get plenty of opportunity to enjoy these trains at work! After a brief look at a derailment earlier that spring, you’ll follow the operations of the line starting at 7 AM on a busy June day and carry on into the evening, ending with a meet illuminated by the midnight sun at 1 AM. The trains are dispatched from Anchorage under Track Warrant Control and you’ll view the dispatcher’s display boards to see siding and train status in between catching the action at Eklunta, Matanuska, Talkeetna, Broad Pass, Healy, Clear Site, Nenana, and other locations. Highlights include a unit coal train pulled by 6 matched GP49s, a passenger extra at Denali Park, action on the tall trestle spanning Hurricane Gulch, and of course the incredible skylines of craggy, snow-capped mountains reaching up from floors of emerald green forests!

Giants in the Dark - Winter on the Alaska Railroad

The third in our 3-volume DVD series about the Alaska Railroad brings you a view of Alaskan railroading like no other, for it carries you along the rails in the dead of winter, when temperatures are minus 30 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit and you’re lucky if you see five hours of daylight. Photographer Patrick Hunstiger set up his studio lights and cameras to capture this incredible action in 1994. Now, with this new DVD release from Pentrex, you can experience powerful diesels challenging the cold, snow, and darkness, guiding freight and passenger trains through the frozen frontiers of the Alaskan wilds. Winter alters the way the Alaska Railroad does business. A busy summer week of up to 100 trains a week will drop to 25 during the winter. However, the spectacular drama of railroading in Alaska is undiminished. GP40-2s, GP49s, a GP30, F7-B, E8-B, and MP15 are seen spewing show from the rails, sliding through the darkness while snow flurries cover the cabs, and hauling their trains past ice clogged-bays and jagged white peaks. Approaching the Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood aboard the Ski Train is a magical sight for the mountain is lit for night skiing, but for the most part what you’ll see is the bitter cold, the heavy storms, and the dangers facing the men and equipment in a land of perpetual darkness. It’s an extraordinary insight into a type of railroading that few dare to face.
